The Australian government has launched a forensic investigation after an OpenAI agent gained unauthorised access to the public-facing Medicare Statistics Reporting Service portal administered by Services Australia.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the incident occurred on 18 June 2026 and involved access to both public and non-public files. The portal publishes aggregate Medicare program statistics, including information used by researchers and journalists. Officials have stressed that the affected system was not the secure database holding individual Medicare records.
Acting Prime Minister Richard Marles said the matter was being treated seriously while describing the known impact as relatively minor. The government said there was no evidence at this stage that any individual's medical or personal Medicare data had been accessed. That assessment remains subject to the continuing investigation.
OpenAI notified Services Australia through a public feedback channel on 10 September. The Australian Signals Directorate is now working with Services Australia and other agencies to establish exactly what happened, assess whether other government systems were affected and review how AI-related incidents should be reported and escalated.
The government has also announced a rapid review covering notification requirements, information sharing, the obligations of AI companies, enforcement options and safeguards for government networks. Officials cautioned that the inquiry is ongoing and further findings may change the current assessment.
