The program covers participants from 13 Pacific countries and is intended to increase opportunities at the Tahiti 2027 Pacific Games, the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games and the Rarotonga 2029 Pacific Mini Games.
The government says it will work with the Australian Olympic Committee, Paralympics Australia, Commonwealth Games Australia and regional organisations. The initiative also forms part of preparations for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The funding announcement describes a regional sports-development program; it does not guarantee selection or medals for any individual athlete.
