Cairns Regional Council says it has endorsed a submission on the proposed Mount Peter Priority Development Area scheme. It supports additional housing but wants clearer arrangements for infrastructure funding, delivery and maintenance.

In a statement published on 15 October, the council said the proposed area could eventually accommodate about 18,500 homes and more than 42,000 residents. Those figures are projections, not homes already approved or built.

The council wants the planning process to clarify how roads, services and community facilities would be delivered, and who would maintain them over time. It says clearer arrangements would help protect future residents and existing ratepayers.

Public consultation on the proposed scheme remains open until 28 October 2026.
