Cairns Regional Council has endorsed a new three-year agreement to support the Cairns Historical Society in operating the Cairns Museum and Research Centre.

The Resource and Performance Agreement will run from 1 July 2027 to 30 June 2030 and provide $557,000 excluding GST each year through cash and in-kind support. Council says the museum attracts more than 20,000 visitors annually and provides education programs, volunteer opportunities and community initiatives.

Council is also planning a $1.5 million renewal of the heritage-listed School of Arts building from July 2027. The work is intended to preserve the building and the local collections it houses for future generations.

A separate three-year agreement will provide Superyacht Australia with $10,000 annually to promote Cairns ahead of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games and seek more superyacht visits to the region.
