The cause of death of a dugong found at Wonga Beach in Far North Queensland has not been publicly established.
Newsport Daily reported that the animal, estimated at about two metres long, was discovered on the beach on 23 September. Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service officers collected the animal that afternoon after a resident reported it.
The report described cuts and shallow marks on the animal. Residents raised different possibilities, including net interaction, while a former biologist quoted by Newsport cautioned that dugongs can also carry extensive scarring from interactions with other dugongs.
No official finding about the cause was included in the report. Claims circulating online about how the animal died therefore remain unconfirmed. Dugongs are protected marine mammals along Queensland's tropical and subtropical coast.
