Lovely Professional University has suspended regular classes for 10 days from 28 September and postponed mid-term examinations after unrest at its Phagwara campus.
Punjab Police said a special investigation team had been formed to examine the incident that triggered the protest and the violence that followed. Police also said traffic on National Highway 44 was restored after a blockade lasting about 15 hours.
The unrest followed claims circulated about an alleged sexual assault. Police registered a case against an unknown person and said the claim would be investigated. The university has denied the allegation, describing it as false and unverified. Cairns Punjabi News is not independently confirming either account while the investigation continues.
Reports said property and vehicles were damaged and police personnel were injured during the confrontation. Authorities said a large police deployment remained in place and that the situation had been brought under control.
