Alexander Zverev has won the US Open men’s singles championship, beating American finalist Ben Shelton 6-3, 7-6 (2), 5-7, 6-2 at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Zverev established control by taking the opening two sets. Shelton extended the contest by winning the third, but the German top seed responded strongly in the fourth to complete the victory.
The trophy is Zverev’s first US Open title and his second Grand Slam crown. He had previously lost the 2020 final in New York after leading by two sets.
Shelton was attempting to become the first American man to win a Grand Slam singles title since Andy Roddick at the 2003 US Open. His run to the final nevertheless marked his best result at a major.
