Construction has begun on a new water treatment plant for the Doomadgee community as a joint federal and Queensland water security project reaches its next stage.
A two-megalitre treated-water storage tank and associated pipework have already been installed and commissioned, according to a Queensland Government statement. The treatment plant remains under construction, with completion targeted for mid-2027, subject to weather.
The state says the work has supported 11 local Indigenous jobs, about 280 hours of training in the community and more than $746,000 in spending through local Indigenous suppliers.
The project is funded jointly through the Australian Government's National Water Grid Fund and the Queensland Government. Officials say it is designed to provide a more reliable supply of safe drinking water over the long term; that outcome depends on the remaining construction and commissioning work.
