Permanent repairs to Kuranda Weir are complete, the Queensland Government said on 23 October, nearly three years after ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper damaged the water infrastructure near Cairns.
The government said floodwaters in December 2023 washed away about 50 metres of the weir's earthen embankment. The weir supplies water for the 66-megawatt Barron Gorge Hydro Power Station.
According to the state announcement, the new works replace the damaged section with a concrete structure, stabilise the remaining embankment and add erosion protection near the rail corridor. CleanCo had returned the power station to service about six months after the cyclone while permanent reconstruction continued.
The announcement describes the completed project as a resilience improvement; it does not provide a new generation forecast or a total project cost.
