The Queensland Government has awarded tenders for five new petroleum and gas exploration areas in the Cooper-Eromanga Basin and Taroom Trough.

Bridgeport Energy has been awarded about 2,712 square kilometres across three areas in the Cooper-Eromanga Basin, while Vintage Energy has received about 625 square kilometres in the same basin.

A consortium involving XST Taroom, Cooper Energy, Imperial Oil and Gas and Eastern States Energy has been awarded a 306-square-kilometre exploration area in the Taroom Trough.

The awards permit exploration and do not mean commercial production has begun. The government says the program is intended to identify future domestic supply and encourage regional investment, while any later development would remain subject to regulatory approvals.
