Queensland Health says the $53 million upgrade includes a new two-storey facility for expanded maternity and oral health services, along with refurbishment work across existing campus buildings. The changes are intended to give more patients access to care closer to home and reduce the need for trips to Townsville University Hospital or other facilities.
The Kirwan Maternity Clinic now brings services that were previously spread across several locations into one space. Its facilities include 15 consultation rooms, dedicated ultrasound and procedure suites, onsite pathology collection, telehealth-enabled clinics, childbirth education areas and family-friendly spaces. Queensland Health expects the clinic to support more than 21,000 maternity outpatient appointments each year.
Oral health capacity has increased from eight to 11 dental chairs. The expanded service includes individual sound-dampened treatment rooms as well as new diagnostic imaging and digital dentistry technology.
Queensland Health said additional frontline maternity and oral health staff will support the increased capacity at the campus.
