Students from four Far North Queensland schools have presented plans to address everyday environmental problems to Cairns Regional Council as part of the Gifted Global Green program.

According to a council statement issued on 20 October, Trinity Beach State School's project focuses on composting organic waste, while White Rock State School is working on reducing litter. Whitfield State School is mapping hot areas of its grounds and exploring ways to reduce heat stress. Port Douglas State School is focusing on the impact of vehicles left idling near school.

The program is delivered by the Holloways Beach Environmental Education Centre. Council says it has supported the initiative since 2014, contributing $10,000 a year as well as in-kind assistance.

The presentations described projects in progress. Council says students are expected to show their completed work to teachers, councillors, mentors and families at an end-of-year event; it has not reported measured environmental results yet.
