Cairns residents can now nominate people who have made a significant contribution to the community for the council's 2027 Australia Day Awards.
Cairns Regional Council announced on 22 October that nominations are open for Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year and Volunteer of the Year. Nominees must live in the Cairns council area and have made a significant community contribution through their own efforts.
The council's awards page says nominations should be at least 100 words, give specific examples and match the category criteria. A nominator may put forward one person per category. Forms and full eligibility rules are available on that page.
Nominations close on Sunday 20 December 2026. The council says winners will be announced at its 2027 Australia Day awards ceremony on 26 January.
